About

Specialist maternity care for the West of Ireland

Welcome to Galway Maternity Services, based at University Hospital Galway (UHG). We provide complete maternity care for women across the West of Ireland, from the first weeks of pregnancy through to the postnatal period.

Our service combines the experience of a busy regional maternity unit, with consultant-led care for complex pregnancies, with a midwife-led service for women who prefer continuity of midwifery care close to home. Whatever shape your pregnancy takes, our aim is the same: that you, your partner, and your baby come through it healthy and well-supported.

Who we are

Galway Maternity Services is part of HSE West and North West, the public hospital group covering the West and North West of Ireland. We are an academic teaching hospital, working closely with the University of Galway, the HSE, and a range of community and primary care services.

Most importantly, we are a team of people who together look after over 2,000 women and their babies every year. That includes midwives, consultant obstetricians, neonatologists, anaesthetists, paediatricians, sonographers, physiotherapists, dietitians, healthcare assistants, ward clerks, and the many other professionals who keep a maternity unit running.

Your team in pregnancy

Depending on your individual needs and how your pregnancy progresses, you may be cared for by some or all of:

  • Community Midwives, providing antenatal care in clinics close to home, and continuing your postnatal care through the Early Transfer Home Service where eligible.
  • Hospital Midwives, including the team that will be with you during labour and birth.
  • Consultant Obstetricians, leading care for higher-risk pregnancies and supporting the team across all births.
  • Sonographers, performing your dating and anomaly scans, and any additional scans you may need.
  • Specialist nurses, in our diabetes-and-pregnancy clinic, anaesthetic clinic, and others.
  • Physiotherapists, working with you through pregnancy and into the postnatal period, particularly for pelvic girdle pain, back pain, pelvic floor recovery, and return to activity.
  • Dietitians, anaesthetists, paediatricians, and other specialists, as needed.

Your booking visit at around 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy is when your individual care plan is mapped out with you.
